Women from Finland and Mozambique – Photos brings together two photographic perspectives on women’s lives in Finland and Mozambique. Created as part of an international photography exchange, the book is a collaboration between Finnish photographer Magi Viljanen and Mozambican photographer Rui Assubuji.

The photographers crossed countries and perspectives: Assubuji photographed women in Finland, while Viljanen travelled through Mozambique, photographing women from different social backgrounds in their homes and workplaces. Her photographs combine portraits with images of capulanas, the colourful textiles widely worn by women in Mozambique.

Viljanen completed the photography for both the exhibition and the book during an intensive four-week journey through a country whose infrastructure had been severely damaged. The shooting days often stretched from sunrise until well past midnight, but the journey became one of the most memorable of her life.

Together, the two photographers’ work offers parallel views of women’s everyday lives in two very different cultural and social environments.
