Africa Women is a photographic series portraying women in Mozambique. The works combine elements of classical and contemporary photography by joining portraits of women with images of African textiles known as capulanas. The series reflects the shared humanity of women across cultures while presenting everyday life in Mozambique from a realistic perspective. The photographs portray women from different social backgrounds in their own environments, either at home or at work.

The series forms part of an international photography exchange project between Finland and Mozambique and was published in the book Women from Finland and Mozambique – Photos, created in collaboration with Mozambican photographer Rui Assubuji. While Assubuji photographed women in Finland, Magi Viljanen’s contribution focuses on the lives of women in Mozambique.
